The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a flash flood advisory through 10:30 p.m. for Hawaii Island.

At 7:30 p.m., radar showed heavy rain near South Hilo as well as the slopes above Pahala and Naalehu, according to the service. The rainfall has exceeded 2 inches per hour at times.

Residents are advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas.

Motorists are advised to use caution while driving because rainfall and runoff can cause hazardous driving conditions like reduced visibility and poor braking action.
